SIMON
MARK
MARVELLOUS
BLIND SPOTS
Expressions
is delighted to present the photographic exhibition Marvellous
Blind Spots, by Wellington artist Simon Mark. Mark has a rare
ability to find beauty, and vivid displays of colour, in ordinary
scenes. A neon sign; a basketball court; rows of public seating;
shipping containers – all of these ordinary scenes take on new significance
in Mark’s photographs. Born in Upper Hutt , Mark’s latest body of
work includes local scenes as well as international images for which
he is well known.
Mark’s
time spent living and travelling overseas continues to inform his
art, which challenges traditional travel photography conventions
and New Zealand photography’s traditional association with the ‘scenic’
and ‘picturesque’.
Marvellous
Blind Spots, Mark’s first exhibition at Expressions, features
a compelling selection of recent photographs. These dynamic and
cosmopolitan images are unique in New Zealand photography – a discipline
traditionally dominated by local subject matter.
Mark chooses marginal areas and
uses the lens to look beyond the subject and give the viewer a fresh
and original view of the ordinary. His images are varied and include
landscapes and interiors, street scenes and rural places, long views
and close-ups. Marvellous Blind Spots represents Simon Mark’s
concerns, challenging audiences to consider the politics of observation
and place, with a profound sense of colour and composition.
