Whale Rider Screening Supports Expressions
Expressions Arts and Entertainment Trust, in conjunction with
Orongomai Marae and the Light House cinema, are hosting a special
screening of the acclaimed New Zealand film ‘The Whale Rider’ on
Thursday night.
Organisers are working with the film’s producers to secure
special guests for the occasion.
"We’ve planned this screening so we can stimulate
ideas of how a home grown film, such as ‘The Whale Rider’,
can act as a catalyst for a range of community activities," said
Nicola Meek, Chair of Expressions Arts and Entertainment Trust.
"The film illustrates ideas about our history, stories about who
we
are and where we come from as well as the craft of film making.
Expressions can host a range of activities such as story-telling
workshops and displays about the heritage of the people who make
up our community."
The night promises to be a dazzling black tie occasion with supper
and wine and guests from the movie. The Rev Tamati Kaiwai, who
comes from Whangara where ‘The Whale Rider’ was filmed,
will introduce the background of the movie.
Funds raised by the evening will be used by the Trust to support
programmes and activities for the new Expressions Arts and Entertainment
Centre.
The Centre is nearing completion with the fitout scheduled for
late autumn. Watch for more details of the spring opening and check
out the Expressions website.
