NUNSENSE
II
The
Second Coming ...
Nunsense
II, is another hilarious musical comedy by Dan Goggin. The story
begins six weeks after the Little Sisters of Hoboken staged their
first benefit show. This time, they give a thank-you show for their
supporters in the school auditorium, which is now set up for the
eighth grade production 'The Mikado'. They have no need of money
now, thanks to the large cash prize that Sister Mary Amnesia has
won. The show goes well, but chaos erupts when the Franciscans arrive
to claim Sister Mary Amnesia (and her prize money) as one of their
own. Then the bird house falls on Sister Mary Amnesia's head - and
everything changes ...
Here
we meet again Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer;
Sister Mary Hebert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from
Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who
is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia,
the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head.
Nunsense
II is a fun show that features star turns, dancing, comic surprises
and audience participation (care for a game of Bingo?). The author,
Dan Goggin, spent a great deal of his life around nuns. He wrote
the Nunsense musicals because he wanted to share what he knew to
be 'the humour of the nun'. It may be hard to believe when you see
the show, but each of the sisters is based on a real life nun.

Gillian Ansell - viola
Ashley Brown - cello
Chamber
Music is often called 'the music of friends' and this piano quartet
(P4) concert, one of just three special performances, brings together
'friends' who are four of New Zealand's best instrumentalists: cellist
Ashley Brown, Gillian Ansell, Wilma Smith, and pianist Michael Houstoun
- collectively B.A.S.H.
The
programme combines two of the most popular works from the piano
quartet repertoire, Brahms' Piano Quartet in A major 1857 and Faure's
Quartet No 1 in C minor of 1877, together with an unfamiliar two
movement miniature from 1988 by Soviet composer, Alfred Schnittke,
who followed in the footsteps of Dmitri Shostakovich.
