Where did the idea for Expressions come from?
Back in February 1993 a proposal for an Upper Hutt arts
theatre and gallery was presented by the Upper Hutt Valley Community
Arts Council to the Upper Hutt City Council. In February 1994 the
council established the Upper Hutt Community Arts Centre Trust.
Plans progressed until final approval to go to tender was given
in December 2001.
When did Expressions start being built?
Demolition of the former Civic complex commenced in June 2002.
When did Expressions
open?
Expressions was officially opened on 1 September 2003.
Where is Expressions?
You will find us between the Upper Hutt City Council building and H2O Xtream,
at 836 Fergusson Drive.
What about car parking?
Car parking is plentiful and free. There is street front parking or a car park
at the rear.
But Expressions is just an arts centre, isn’t it?
The range of activities at Expressions is much broader than “just
the arts”. Some examples of the things we see Expressions
being used for are:
- exhibitions
- plays
- cultural events
- sports events
- prizegivings
- cabarets
- school projects and productions
- church functions
- performing arts competitions
- presentations, seminars, public meetings
- conferences, tradeshows, training sessions, workshops
- weddings and wedding receptions
- community celebrations
Can we hire Expressions for our own activities?
Yes. The foyer, theatre and gallery spaces are all available for
special functions, corporate events and conferences. The green room
above the theatre can be used for club meetings. Let us show you
how you can host a memorable event.
What about facilities
for the disabled?
Expressions has been designed so that public spaces, including
toilets, are easily accessible by wheelchair.
And if you should need a chair for
getting round the venue but don’t have one, set your mind
at rest – thanks to the Inner Wheel Club of Upper Hutt we
now have two brand new wheelchairs available for use.
There is also a sound
loop in the theatre for the hearing impaired.
